A MISSING CAMERA: The In-Between

2024, Five photo prints on metal, each 60 x 90 cm

“A Missing Camera” employs AI technology to create images that emulate the aesthetics of documentary photography, drawing upon real stories. Particular moments within these testimonies were analysed and transmuted into visual documentation. These moments, where a camera was missing to be captured, become an act of reclamation, where the absence of a camera during these pivotal moments paradoxically becomes the catalyst for their artistic representation. The sound piece was also generated by using digital tools. The same story was transformed into musical compositions by developing an algorithm that translates alphabetic characters into corresponding musical notes, offering an alternative way of “hearing” the story.

Berlin is a place where historical scars coexist with progressive ideals and where the privileges enjoyed by many often obscure the systemic inequalities marginalised communities face. “The In-Between” challenges viewers to confront these uncomfortable truths by placing traditionally underrepresented figures in a space that is both intimate and expansive. We cannot tell if they are drowning or diving; this uncertainty is precisely the point as water carries dual meanings as a symbol: it is both life-giving and life-threatening. It represents a barrier and a bridge. In these images, the water encapsulates the subject, blurring the lines between freedom and confinement, between individual agency and collective influence.
