The In-Between is a five-part iteration of A Missing Camera, developed from a testimony for which no photographic record exists. Using generative AI, Barakeh constructed five apparently documentary images of figures submerged in water. First installed along the fence of Sommerbad Humboldthain in Berlin.
The figures look towards the viewer from beneath the surface, but their movement remains unresolved: they may be diving, swimming, or drowning. This uncertainty collapses the secure distance between the swimming pool and the waters crossed by people seeking refuge in Europe.
An accompanying sound work translates the same testimony through an algorithm that assigns alphabetic characters to musical notes. Across image and sound, lived experience is mediated twice—first through synthetic photographic conventions, then through code.
