GREATEST HITS - Ongoing project

Israeli military terminology draws from heterogeneous sources: pre-existing name banks, scripture, national poetry, nature, geography, memorial figures, and the language of defence. Raids, bombardments, and occupation are reframed as weather, ritual, protection, or heroic continuity, distancing military action from its material consequences.

Greatest Hits is an evolving installation that gives material form to names assigned by the Israeli military. Barakeh translates titles into mostly ready-made, everyday objects. Detached from military communiqués and rendered literally, the names cease to function smoothly as codes and become strange, banal, and at times absurd. By returning metaphor to matter, Greatest Hits exposes the distance between the aesthetic surface of military language and the violence it helps frame and legitimise.
